AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) is the share of fuel a boiler turns into heat. A cast iron boiler at 82% AFUE is rugged and long-lived but sends more heat up the chimney; a condensing boiler at 90-95%+ AFUE pulls extra heat from the exhaust with a stainless steel heat exchanger and vents through PVC out a sidewall.
