Buyer's Guide

How to Choose a Furnace Brand on Long Island

With so many furnace brands on the market, the best one is really the one that fits your home, your fuel, and your budget, and is installed correctly. Here is what we tell Long Island homeowners to weigh:

  • Efficiency (AFUE): how much of your fuel becomes heat. Standard furnaces run about 80%; high-efficiency condensing models reach 90-98%. Over a long Long Island winter, the fuel savings add up.
  • Burner staging: single-stage runs full-blast or off, while two-stage and modulating burners ramp output to match the weather for steadier, quieter heat.
  • Blower motor: a variable-speed ECM blower is quieter, spreads air more evenly, and uses less electricity than an older PSC motor.
  • Correct sizing: an oversized furnace short-cycles and wears out early. We size with a Manual J heat-loss calculation, not a rule of thumb.
  • Fuel: natural gas, propane, or oil, and we can help you convert if it makes sense.
  • Warranty and parts: longer heat-exchanger warranties and easy parts availability lower your long-term cost.

Tell us about your home and we will match you to the right brand and model, with a free, no-pressure estimate.

Efficiency

Standard vs High-Efficiency Furnaces

AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) is the share of fuel a furnace turns into usable heat over a year. A standard 80% AFUE furnace sends about 20 cents of every fuel dollar up the flue; a high-efficiency condensing furnace at 95-98% AFUE wastes almost none.

Condensing models pull extra heat out of the exhaust, so they vent through a PVC pipe out a sidewall and drain a little condensate instead of using a metal chimney. They cost more up front but can cut heating bills by 10-20%, which matters over a long heating season. We will show you the payback both ways so you can choose with eyes open.

Comfort

Single-Stage, Two-Stage and Modulating Furnaces

Furnaces also differ in how they deliver heat:

  • Single-stage: one fixed output, full power whenever it runs. Lowest cost, but you can feel warm-then-cool swings.
  • Two-stage: a high and a low setting, so it runs longer and gentler on milder days for more even temperatures and less noise.
  • Modulating: continuously adjusts output, often in 1% steps, to hold a very steady temperature. It is the quietest, most comfortable option.

Paired with a variable-speed blower, two-stage and modulating furnaces keep rooms evenly warm and run quietly. We will help you decide how much of a comfort upgrade is worth it for your home. Heating a different way? See our boiler brands and heat pump brands.

Installation

Why Professional Installation Matters More Than the Brand

Here is what the brochures will not tell you: a mid-range furnace installed correctly will outperform a premium furnace installed poorly. Proper sizing, sealed and correctly sized ductwork, the right venting, a clean fuel hookup, and careful commissioning are what actually determine comfort, efficiency, and how long the system lasts.

Our licensed, factory-trained technicians install every furnace to manufacturer spec and local code across Suffolk and Nassau County, so you get the efficiency you paid for. Whether you need a repair, an annual tune-up, or a new install, see our full furnace service or request a free estimate.
