Installing a New Thermostat: Things to Know

Thermostat installation can be a tricky matter, depending on what type of device you choose.  It is not recommended that you try this on your own, but if you do, there are a few things to keep in mind. Make sure to check behind your current thermostat and look for either two or three wires. If there is only two, then you will need to have Domino Fuel come out and set it up for you. If you choose to try this on your own, please follow a few safety guidelines, or else you could have quite a shock!

Before removing the old thermostat:

Cut off the power to the to the furnace via the emergency shut off or the break switch

Then unscrew the mounting bracket

Disconnect each wire, tape them to the wall, and label them with the letter from the terminal they came from

Some older thermostats contain mercury and must be disposed of using proper methods set up by the Thermostat Recycling Corporation

Thermostat Replacement Long Island

Line up the new thermostat with the brackets on the wall, and connect the wires using the diagram that came with the new thermostat

The thermostat needs at least three wires, a black and white one that turns the heater on and off, and one that powers the thermostat. If you only have two wires, then it is imperative that you call us and let us come out and handle to installation using time honored and industry standard methods and tools.

The next step is to connect the thermostat to the furnace, and this requires specialized training. Please do not try this on your own if you don’t have the required experience.
