Buyer's Guide

How to Choose a Heat Pump or Central AC Brand

A heat pump both heats and cools; a central air conditioner only cools and pairs with a furnace. For either, the brand matters less than the ratings, the sizing, and the install. Weigh these:

  • Efficiency: SEER2 measures cooling efficiency and HSPF2 measures heating efficiency, higher is better.
  • Staging: single-stage, two-stage, or variable-speed inverter for steadier comfort and lower bills.
  • Cold-climate capability: look for cold-climate heat pumps that hold output through a Long Island winter.
  • Correct sizing: a Manual J load calculation, since an oversized system cools unevenly and controls humidity poorly.
  • Matched system: the indoor coil or air handler should be AHRI-matched to the outdoor unit.
  • Rebates: NYS Clean Heat and utility rebates can offset a big share of the cost.

Efficiency

SEER2, HSPF2 and EER2 Explained

SEER2 (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2) rates cooling efficiency over a season; HSPF2 (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor 2) rates heating efficiency for heat pumps; EER2 rates efficiency at peak conditions. Higher numbers mean lower bills.

Variable-speed inverter systems usually post the highest SEER2 and HSPF2 because the compressor ramps up and down instead of slamming on and off, which also means quieter, more even comfort.

Heat Pump vs AC

Should You Choose a Heat Pump or Central AC?

A heat pump is essentially an air conditioner that can run in reverse to heat your home, so it can replace or supplement a furnace and cut heating costs, especially with today's cold-climate models. A central AC only cools and relies on a separate furnace for heat.

Going ductless instead? See our AC mini-split brands. Either way the indoor air handler is part of the system.

Installation

Why Professional Installation Matters More Than the Brand

Independent testing shows most underperforming systems are install problems, not equipment problems: an incorrect refrigerant charge, a poorly sized or kinked line set, or restricted airflow can erase a high-SEER2 rating. Correct sizing, charge, line set, and airflow are everything.

Our technicians commission every system by the numbers. See our heat pump service or request a free estimate.
