SEER2 (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2) rates cooling efficiency over a season; HSPF2 (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor 2) rates heating efficiency for heat pumps; EER2 rates efficiency at peak conditions. Higher numbers mean lower bills.
Variable-speed inverter systems usually post the highest SEER2 and HSPF2 because the compressor ramps up and down instead of slamming on and off, which also means quieter, more even comfort.
A heat pump is essentially an air conditioner that can run in reverse to heat your home, so it can replace or supplement a furnace and cut heating costs, especially with today's cold-climate models. A central AC only cools and relies on a separate furnace for heat.
