About Rheem Heat Pumps

Domino Fuel is a Rheem Pro Partner contractor. We size, install, repair and service Rheem heat pumps in Nassau and Suffolk Counties and Queens, with factory-trained technicians and 24/7 emergency service when the heat quits.

Rheem has built heating, cooling and water heating equipment since 1925 and owns more than 50 brands, Ruud among them. Its current split heat pumps come in four tiers: Prestige, Classic Plus, Classic and Select.

The newest AY models use R-454B, the lower-GWP refrigerant that replaced R-410A in new equipment. They pair with Rheem's PlusOne refrigerant detection system in the indoor coil or air handler. The top models work with the EcoNet app and Smart Thermostat.

Rheem sells its central heat pumps, air conditioners, gas furnaces and air handlers as the Rheem Endeavor Line, built for the 2023 Department of Energy rules, in three tiers: Prestige, Classic Plus and Classic.

Long Island Homes

Rheem Heat Pumps for Long Island Homes

Most Long Island houses already have an oil or gas boiler, so the first question is how the heat pump and the old system share the job. PSEG Long Island's whole-house rebate requires a Manual J load calculation and a heat pump sized for 100 to 120% of the home's heating load. If the fossil system stays, you need dual fuel or integrated controls and the heat pump has to be the primary heat source.

That's where the cold climate models earn their place. The RD18AY lists a heating operating range of -22F to 70F and modulates between 45% and 100% of capacity when paired with Rheem EcoNet controls, so it can stretch output on a windy night in Riverhead and slow down on a mild one. PSEG also requires units without a furnace component to appear on the NEEP cold climate list.

Narrow side yards in Nassau and small lots near the water leave little room for a square condenser. The RD18AY's side-discharge cabinet comes as small as 40.2 inches wide and 16.4 inches deep, which often fits where a top-discharge unit can't.

Warranty

Rheem Heat Pump Warranty

Rheem's current heat pumps carry a 10-year conditional parts warranty, and the condition is registration. The flagship RP19AY goes further, with 10 years of parts plus a 10-year conditional unit replacement, again with registration required.

The RD18AY spec sheet notes that its parts warranty has no AHRI-matched system requirement and applies to a heat pump-only install, which helps when you're keeping a newer air handler. Register the unit soon after the install and keep the paperwork.

On top of the manufacturer's coverage, Domino backs every installation with a 1-year labor warranty.

Rheem vs Ruud Heat Pumps

Rheem and Ruud are sister brands. Rheem bought the Ruud Manufacturing Company in 1959, and Rheem Sales Company makes Ruud's heating and cooling line today. Both sell the same outdoor platform, and the 2025 brochures list the same RD18AY, RP15AY, RP14AY and WP15AY models with matching ratings.

The differences are the badge, the series names and the flagship code. Rheem calls its top tier Prestige and its flagship RP19AY; Ruud calls the same tier Ultra and sells the UP19AY. Since the ratings match, pick on price and availability for your size, and see our Ruud heat pump page for Ruud's own series names.

Repair & Service

Rheem Heat Pump Repair and Service

These are the Rheem problems our heat pump repair techs see most. We stock the common parts, including capacitors, contactors, defrost sensors and condensate pumps, and a yearly tune-up checks charge, defrost and drains before winter.

  • Outdoor unit stays caked in ice: a failed defrost sensor or control, low refrigerant, or a unit sitting too low in the snow.
  • Cool air from the vents in heat mode: a stuck reversing valve, low charge, or a thermostat set up for the wrong system type.
  • Outdoor unit stops and won't restart: the PlusOne refrigerant detection system may have paused it after sensing a leak at the indoor coil.
  • Breaker trips when the unit starts: a weak capacitor or contactor on two-stage models, or a drive board fault on inverter models.
  • Runs nonstop on the coldest days: an undersized unit, a dirty coil, or backup heat that isn't staging in.
Installation

Rheem Heat Pump Installation and Replacement

Here's how a Rheem install runs with us. See our heat pump installation page for the full process.

  1. We do a Manual J load calculation and look at your ducts, panel and the spot for the outdoor unit.
  2. We match the Rheem outdoor model to an indoor coil or air handler and check rebate rules for that pairing.
  3. We set the pad, run the line set, wire the disconnect and install the thermostat or dual fuel controls.
  4. We pull a deep vacuum, charge to spec, and test heating, cooling and defrost before we leave.
  5. We walk you through the controls and register the heat pump with Rheem for you.

FAQ

Rheem Heat Pump FAQs

Common questions about this heat pump brand on Long Island.

1Will a Rheem heat pump keep my house warm in a Long Island winter?

Yes, if it's a cold climate model sized from a Manual J. The RD18AY lists heating down to -22F, and the RP19AY, RP15AY and WP15AY are ENERGY STAR Cold Climate certified.

2How much does a Rheem heat pump cost on Long Island?

Call for a quote. Price depends on the size of the house, the series you pick, duct condition, electrical work, and whether the old boiler stays. PSEG rebates of $4,000, or up to a $7,500 rebate for income-qualified homes, can come off the total.

3Do I have to register my Rheem heat pump?

Yes. Rheem's 10-year conditional parts warranty, and the unit replacement coverage on the RP19AY, require registration.

4Can a Rheem heat pump work with my oil boiler?

Yes. PSEG allows the fossil system to stay if you install dual fuel or integrated controls and the heat pump runs as the primary heat source.

5Is a Rheem heat pump the same as a Ruud?

Close to it. Rheem Sales Company makes Ruud, and the two share models and ratings under different series names.
