On Long Island the heat pump usually joins an existing oil boiler or furnace instead of replacing it on day one. That setup works with PSEG Long Island's rebate as long as you add dual fuel or integrated controls and let the heat pump run as the primary heat source. The utility pays $4,000 at market rate and up to a $7,500 rebate for income-qualified households, and it requires a Manual J and a unit sized for 100 to 120% of the heating load.

For homes that want the heat pump to carry real winter load, we lean toward the Ultra RD18AY. Ruud lists its heating range at -22F to 70F, with capacity that varies from 45% to 100%. Because it blows air out the side, the cabinet is shallow (Ruud quotes sizes down to 16.4 inches deep and 40.2 inches wide), handy on a tight lot in Long Beach or a narrow side yard in Huntington.

Homes near the water need a little extra care. We set the outdoor unit up off the ground, away from salt spray where we can, and rinse the coil at each tune-up.

One detail on the RD18AY: Ruud's spec sheet says the parts coverage doesn't require an AHRI-matched system and applies even if you replace only the outdoor heat pump. That matters if your air handler is only a few years old and you'd rather keep it.
