About Trane Heat Pumps

Variable-speed models run at low speed most of the day, so they're quieter than an old single-speed unit. We install, repair and service Trane heat pumps across Long Island, and we stock the common parts. Our factory-trained technicians have been keeping Long Island homes warm since 1981.

Trane is a brand of Trane Technologies, the same company that sells American Standard Heating and Air Conditioning. Trane says it has more than 60 years of heat pump engineering behind it. Its product lines go through five years of wear in a few months at its SEET test lab in Tyler, Texas.

The current lineup is split into Premier, Priority and Choice tiers. You'll find variable-speed, multi-speed and single-stage heat pumps from 2 to 5 tons, and newer units use R-454B refrigerant. If you're comparing brands first, see our full list of heat pump brands we install.

Long Island Homes

Trane Heat Pumps for Long Island Homes

Cold weather is the big question here. Trane says its most efficient standard heat pumps hold 100% of their heating capacity down to 27°F and 70 to 82% at 5°F. The 20 TruComfort cold climate model goes further: 100 to 107% at 5°F and 67 to 85% at -20°F, depending on size.

Many Long Island homes still heat with oil. You can replace that system with a cold climate heat pump sized to carry the whole house, or keep the furnace as backup in a dual fuel setup. PSEG Long Island's whole-house rebate is $4,000 at market rate and up to $7,500 for income-qualified homes. It needs a participating contractor, a Manual J load calculation, a system sized at 100 to 120% of the heating load, a unit on the NEEP cold climate list, and dual fuel controls if a fossil fuel system stays. Domino is a PSEG Long Island participating contractor.

Near the water, salt air and wind-blown sand are hard on outdoor coils. Trane's WeatherGuard top accessory helps keep rain, snow and leaves out of the unit, and a yearly coil cleaning does the rest.

Warranty

Trane Heat Pump Warranty

Trane has two levels of coverage. The Base Limited Warranty covers parts for 5 years on most heat pumps. Register within 60 days of installation and you get the Registered Limited Warranty, which runs 10 years on the compressor, outdoor coil and parts.

Select models get more. The 20 TruComfort cold climate unit carries a 12-year limited warranty on the compressor and 10 years on the outdoor coil and functional parts with registration. Neither warranty pays for labor, and a registered warranty can transfer to a new owner within 90 days of a home sale.

On top of the manufacturer's coverage, Domino backs every installation with a 1-year labor warranty.

Trane vs American Standard Heat Pumps

Trane and American Standard are sister brands. Trane Technologies sells both and even runs matching apps for them: Trane Home and American Standard Home, plus Trane Link and American Standard Link for sharing system data with your technician.

The differences are mostly names, tiers and dealer networks. Trane sorts its line into Premier, Priority and Choice. Compare the spec sheet for each quote: SEER2, HSPF2 and heating capacity at 5°F. Sizing and installation matter more than the badge.

Repair & Service

Trane Heat Pump Repair and Service

Most Trane heat pump calls we get fall into a few patterns. Here's what each symptom usually points to.

We stock the common parts for Trane heat pumps, including capacitors, contactors, fan motors, defrost sensors and filters. Our 24/7 emergency service covers no-heat calls in the middle of the night.

A tune-up before heating season keeps the system efficient. We clean the outdoor coil, check the refrigerant charge, test the defrost cycle and backup heat, and tighten electrical connections. Book heat pump repair on Long Island if something already feels off.

  • Outdoor unit stays iced over: a failed defrost sensor or defrost control isn't clearing the coil.
  • Cool air in heat mode: a stuck reversing valve or a low refrigerant charge.
  • House won't warm up on cold nights: auxiliary heat isn't engaging, or the system was undersized.
  • Short cycling: a dirty coil, a weak capacitor or a thermostat wiring fault.
  • Outdoor fan not spinning: a failed fan motor or capacitor.
  • Error code on the thermostat: variable-speed Trane units report faults to the control, which helps us find the bad part fast.
Installation

Trane Heat Pump Installation and Replacement

Price depends on tonnage, the Trane tier you choose, duct condition, any electrical upgrade, and whether old oil equipment comes out. Rebate eligibility can change your net cost too. Call for a quote, or read how our heat pump installation on Long Island works.

  1. We run a Manual J heat load calculation on your home.
  2. We match the right Trane outdoor unit to an air handler or your existing furnace.
  3. We check your ductwork, electrical panel and where the outdoor unit will sit.
  4. We install, pressure test, evacuate and charge the system, then set up the controls.
  5. We walk you through the thermostat and register the heat pump for you within 60 days.

FAQ

Trane Heat Pump FAQs

Common questions about this heat pump brand on Long Island.

1Do Trane heat pumps work in Long Island winters?

Yes. Trane's cold climate model is rated for 100 to 107% of its heating capacity at 5°F and heats down to -20°F. Standard Trane models hold full capacity to 27°F, so many homes pair them with backup heat.

2Can I keep my oil or gas system as backup?

Yes. That's a dual fuel setup, where the furnace takes over in the coldest weather. To qualify for the PSEG Long Island whole-house rebate, you'll need dual fuel controls if the fossil fuel system stays.

3How long does a Trane heat pump last?

Trane says an electric heat pump lasts about 15 years on average. Yearly maintenance helps it reach or pass that, since it runs in both summer and winter.

4Do I have to register my Trane heat pump?

Yes, if you want the longer coverage. Register within 60 days of installation to get the 10-year Registered Limited Warranty instead of the 5-year base warranty.
