Weil-McLain Boilers for Long Island Homes

Many Long Island houses heat with an oil-fired cast iron boiler on a chimney. The WGO, WTGO and SGO fit that setup: each has rear and top flue outlets, and sizes 2 through 7 need a chimney at least 15 feet tall. If your chimney is unlined or you'd rather close it off, the Ultra Oil can vent directly through a wall, and Weil-McLain says it needs no power-assisted fan.

Tight cellar stairs are common in older Nassau and Suffolk homes. A WGO ships at 540 to 1,135 pounds, so Weil-McLain offers a knockdown version with the parts boxed separately for a narrow staircase.

If you run bioheat, Weil-McLain rates the WGO, WTGO, SGO and Ultra Oil for blends up to B100 with approved Beckett or Carlin burners. Riello burner setups are listed for #2 fuel oil only.

Warranty

Weil-McLain Boiler Warranty

For the WGO, WTGO and Ultra Oil, Weil-McLain covers the heat exchanger for 20 years from installation. In years 1 to 5, a failed heat exchanger gets you a replacement boiler (less the burner); in years 6 to 20, you get a replacement heat exchanger. Other parts are covered for 2 years. The SGO steam boiler has a 10-year heat exchanger warranty and the same 2 years on parts.

You don't have to register to activate coverage, but keep your proof of purchase and installation date. A heating contractor diagnoses the problem and files the claim. It doesn't pay labor, and it excludes burners, freezing, flooding and bad water conditions.

Weil-McLain vs Williamson Oil Boilers

Williamson-Thermoflo is Weil-McLain's sister brand under SPX. Line up the published tables for the WTGO and the Williamson OWT and the input and output numbers match size for size, both listing 86% to 87% AFUE. So the real differences sit in the details around the boiler.

Weil-McLain's WTGO runs up to size 9 (295 MBH heating capacity), while the OWT stops at size 6. The WTGO has rear and top flue outlets out of the box; the OWT has a rear outlet and needs a kit for top venting. Warranty terms differ too. Weil-McLain gives 2 years on parts and lists no proration on the heat exchanger, while Williamson gives 1 year on parts and charges a rising share of the heat exchanger cost in years 11 through 20.

Burner locks out with no heat: a clogged nozzle or oil filter, a dirty cad cell or a weak ignitor.
