New Yorker Boilers for Long Island Homes

Most New Yorker oil boilers on Long Island vent into a masonry chimney. The CL Water, CL Steam and FR all call for at least an 8 by 8 inch flue, 15 feet tall. If your chimney liner is shot, the CI-HGS 123E and 160E can switch to New Yorker's FDVS-56 direct vent kit; the two smallest CI-HGS sizes can't.

Weight is a real issue in a cellar with a narrow stairway. A CL5 cast iron boiler ships at about 800 pounds, while the steel AP-U ships at 300 to 355.

For steam radiators, the CL Steam ships fully packaged with a probe-type low water cutoff, gauge glass and pressuretrol. Any size can be ordered with a tankless coil.

Warranty

New Yorker Boiler Warranty

New Yorker's product pages list a lifetime limited warranty on the CL Water, CI-HGS, AP-U and FR heat exchangers, and 10 years on the CL Steam heat exchanger. The written warranty (revised 11/25) puts the first 5 years at no charge; for hot water boilers, a service charge starts at 5% of retail price in year 6 and climbs 5% a year.

New Yorker parts get 1 year. The oil burner, circulator and controls fall under their own makers' warranties, and labor isn't included.

New Yorker asks for online registration within ten days of installation, and we register it for you. Scale, freezing, the wrong fuel and skipped maintenance aren't covered.

New Yorker vs Burnham Oil Boilers

Burnham boilers, now sold under the U.S. Boiler Company name, are New Yorker's sister line under Burnham Holdings. Both make 3-pass cast iron oil boilers rated up to 87% AFUE: New Yorker's CI-HGS and U.S. Boiler's MPO-IQ. Where they split is steel. New Yorker still sells the steel AP-U and FR firetube boilers, and U.S. Boiler's oil lineup is cast iron only.

Here's what we find most often on New Yorker boilers, with the usual reason behind each one.

Red reset light on the burner: the Beckett GeniSYS control locked out after a clogged nozzle, a plugged oil line filter or a dirty cad cell.
Boiler hot but rooms cold: a stuck circulator, a bad zone valve or air in the piping.
Burner shuts down on a CI-HGS: the HydroStat's low water cutoff sensed a drop in system water.
Water hammer on a CL Steam: the water line sits too high, or a return pipe has lost its pitch.
Lukewarm showers: the tankless coil is scaled up or the mixing valve is failing.
