Ruud has made home comfort products since Edwin Ruud's water heater work in the late 1800s, and Rheem has owned the brand since 1959. Rheem Sales Company now builds Ruud's heating and cooling line. Ruud's ductless systems go by the Floating Air name.

Each Floating Air unit uses a variable speed Precision Inverter compressor, so it speeds up or slows down to match the room instead of cycling hard on and off. Ruud lists built-in Wi-Fi, auto restart, dry mode and Diamonblue corrosion protection on all three series. The Achiever Series uses R-32 refrigerant, while Achiever Plus and Ultra use R-454B.

Achiever Plus and Ultra models are ENERGY STAR Cold Climate Heat Pump certified. Only select Achiever model sets are ENERGY STAR certified.
Ruud also makes a multi-zone Ultra air handler (FPHFA18A3D and FPHFA24A3D) that can run small duct systems from a mini split condenser.

Long Island winters aren't arctic, but a few nights each year dip near zero. That's the test for a mini split. Ruud's Ultra single-zone systems are rated to run down to -22F, and Ruud states Ultra models keep 100% of rated heating capacity at 5F. The Insider 36K unit still puts out 25,200 BTU at -13F on its data sheet.

Achiever Plus is the better pick when cooling bills matter more than deep-cold heating, like a south-facing sunroom in Massapequa. It heats to -13F, and its 25 SEER2 top rating is the highest in the lineup.

For three or four bedrooms, one Ultra multi-zone outdoor unit can mix wall, cassette and ducted heads. Ruud's 42K outdoor unit takes up to five indoor units, while the 18K model is a two-room unit. Coastal homes get the Diamonblue coating on every unit, and we raise outdoor units off the ground so snow and meltwater stay clear.

Ruud's limited warranty on Floating Air gives the compressor 10 years as standard. Parts start at 7 years and grow to 10 years when you register the system, so it pays to register soon after the install. We give you the indoor and outdoor model and serial numbers before we leave.

Ruud and Rheem are owned by the same company, and their Floating Air mini splits come off one platform. Put the two brochures side by side and the model codes, SEER2, HSPF2 and low-temperature limits match.

These are the Ruud mini split problems we're called about most. We keep condensate pumps, flare fittings, sensors and remotes on the truck, and an annual cleaning of the coil, blower wheel and drain pan prevents most of them.

Indoor head leaking water down the wall: a blocked condensate line or a drain pan full of debris.
Weak airflow from the head: a clogged washable filter or a dirty blower wheel.
Unit shuts off and shows a code: a communication, sensor or board fault that needs a meter, not a reset.
Outdoor unit won't start on a cold morning: low temperature start-up protection, a power issue, or low refrigerant.
Room never reaches the set temperature: the head is undersized for the room, or a line set leak has dropped the charge.

Our ductless AC installation work on a Ruud system goes like this:

Call for a quote. Price depends on the number of rooms, which series you choose, the indoor style, how far the line sets run, and whether your panel needs a new circuit.

Walk each room with you, measure heat loss, and pick Achiever, Achiever Plus or Ultra.
Plan head and condenser spots so line sets stay short and drains run downhill.
Mount the indoor units, core the wall, and run line set, drain and control wiring.
Install the outdoor unit on a stand or wall bracket with its own circuit.
Nitrogen test, vacuum, release the charge, and run each zone in heat and cool.
