Up to five on the largest Prestige multi-zone unit, the 42K BTU model. Smaller multi-zone units handle two to four rooms.

Do Rheem mini splits need registration for the full warranty?

Yes, for parts. The compressor gets 10 years either way, and parts go from 7 years to 10 years when you register.

Can I control a Rheem mini split from my phone?

Rheem is a heating, cooling and water heating maker that dates to 1925, and Ruud is one of its brands. Its ductless mini splits carry the Floating Air name. Every model uses a Precision Inverter compressor with Soft-Start, so it ramps up to reach the set temperature and then holds it with small adjustments.

All Floating Air units have Diamonblue Advanced Corrosion Protection, and the wall-mounted models use Rheem's PlusOne FastPro design, which lets a technician pull the blower wheel quickly for cleaning. Most models have built-in Wi-Fi and work with the ComfortPro app. The Classic Series runs on R-32; Classic Plus and Prestige use R-454B.

Most mini split calls we get are for rooms the main system can't serve well: a converted garage, a second-floor bedroom over a cold porch, a Cape with no ducts upstairs. A single-zone Classic Plus handles that kind of room efficiently. If the room has to stay warm through a January cold snap without leaning on the boiler, step up to Prestige, which Rheem rates down to -22F on single-zone systems.

For several rooms, a Prestige multi-zone outdoor unit can feed up to five indoor heads, depending on size, and you can mix wall, cassette and ducted units. Only Prestige is offered in multi-zone. Multi-zone units can't heat one room and cool another at the same time, so we plan zones around how you use the house.

Near the water, the Diamonblue coating on every Floating Air unit helps against salt air. We still mount outdoor units on wall brackets or stands above drifting snow, which keeps the coil clear and drains defrost water away.

Rheem's Floating Air brochure lists a 10-year standard compressor warranty. Parts are covered for 7 years as standard, or 10 years if you register the system at RegisterMyUnit.com, so registration adds three years of parts coverage.

Rheem vs Ruud Mini Splits

Rheem and Ruud are sister brands under the same company, and their mini splits share one platform. The Ruud brochure lists the same model codes, such as FAHSW, FPHSR and FPHMR, with the same SEER2, HSPF2 and low-temperature ratings, and both carry the Floating Air name.

Here are the Rheem mini split problems we fix most often. We stock common parts like line set fittings, condensate pumps, remotes and sensors, and a yearly cleaning keeps the coil and blower wheel free of dust and mold.

Water dripping from the indoor head: a clogged drain line, a dirty drain pan, or a unit mounted out of level.
Head runs but barely cools or heats: a dirty filter or blower wheel, or low refrigerant from a flare leak.
Error code flashing on the display: a sensor, board or communication fault between the indoor and outdoor units.
Outdoor unit iced over in winter: a defrost problem, or meltwater that can't drain and refreezes under the unit.
Musty smell when it starts: mold growing on a wet blower wheel or coil that needs a deep clean.

Installation

Our ductless mini split installation follows these steps:

Price: call for a quote, since we don't guess before seeing the house. The biggest factors are the number of zones, the series, the indoor unit type (cassettes and ducted units take more labor), line set length, and any electrical panel work.

Measure each room's heat loss and pick the Rheem series and BTU size for it.
Choose indoor head locations and the outdoor unit spot, keeping line set runs short.
Mount the heads, drill the wall penetrations, and run the line set, drain and communication wire.
Set the outdoor unit on a bracket or stand and wire the dedicated circuit.
Pressure test, pull a vacuum, open the refrigerant, and test heating and cooling in each zone.
