Ideal Indirect Water Heater Repair and Replacement on Long Island

A Monarch tank that runs out of hot water halfway through the second shower is usually a control or piping problem, not a dead tank.

  • Ideal indirect water heaters are the Monarch line: all stainless steel tanks from 30 to 100 gallons, heated by your boiler.
  • Ideal Heating North America, which made them for the US, says it ceased operations on November 3, 2025.
  • A Monarch 40 is rated 228 gallons in the first hour with a boiler of at least 122,000 BTU/h.
  • Most Monarch problems are in the controls, valves and pumps around the tank, and those parts are easy to get.
  • If the tank itself leaks, it has to be replaced. Any boiler-fired indirect from a supported brand can take its place.

About Ideal Indirect Water Heaters

We repair and service Ideal indirect water heaters on Long Island, and we stock the common parts: aquastats, zone valves, circulators, T&P valves and expansion tanks. When the stainless tank itself fails, we replace it with a supported indirect and tie it back into your boiler. Factory-trained technicians and 24/7 emergency service come standard.

The Monarch was Ideal Heating North America's indirect water heater, built to pair with its Exalt and Gallant gas boilers. Those boilers ship with a factory hot water sensor made for the Monarch, so the tank and boiler talk to each other without an add-on.

Ideal traces its roots to the UK in 1906, but the Monarch was a North American product sold through F.W. Webb. On its website, Ideal Heating NA now says it and its sister company Triangle Tube ceased operations effective November 3, 2025.

Ratings follow the AHRI test at 180°F boiler water and a 77°F rise. Each size also lists a minimum boiler input, from 120,000 BTU/h on the Monarch 30 to 192,000 BTU/h on the 80 and 100. A smaller boiler still works, but recovery will be slower than the label.

Ideal Indirect Water Heaters for Long Island Homes

An indirect tank makes the most sense when you already heat with a boiler, which describes a lot of Long Island homes. Your boiler heats a stainless coil inside the tank, so there's no second burner or flue to maintain.

Hard water coats the coil with scale over time. Ideal acid-pickled the stainless for corrosion resistance, but scale still slows recovery. If your water is hard, a softener or regular checks protect the coil.

Basements here are often tight. The Monarch 40 stands 50.5 inches tall and 22.25 inches across, so it fits in most utility rooms next to the boiler.

Warranty

Ideal Indirect Water Heater Warranty

Ideal listed residential Monarch coverage of up to a limited lifetime on the tank, 6 years on parts and a 3-year labor allowance. Commercial installs got up to 6 years on the tank.

Since the US company closed, that coverage is doubtful. Trade press reported the shutdown notice said products would have no warranties from that date. Keep your paperwork, but plan as if a tank failure is out of pocket.

On top of the manufacturer's coverage, Domino backs every installation with a 1-year labor warranty.

Ideal vs PurePro Indirect Water Heaters

Both brands sold through F.W. Webb, and both use stainless steel tanks, so the PurePro SS series is a common replacement for a Monarch. They aren't related: PurePro's indirects are built by AMTROL.

The Monarch 40 lists 228 GPH in the first hour with a 122,000 BTU/h boiler at a 77°F rise. The PurePro SS-40GRY lists 210 GPH with a 120,000 BTU/hr boiler at a 90°F rise, so the numbers aren't measured the same way. PurePro uses a 444 stainless tank with no anode and carries a 10-year residential warranty from its maker, which is still in business. See the PurePro indirect water heater page or our full list of indirect water heater brands.

Repair & Service

Ideal Indirect Water Heater Repair and Service

Once a year, we test the T&P valve, check the expansion tank charge, confirm the aquastat setting, bleed air from the coil and look for leaks. We do it during the boiler tune-up, since the two work as one system.

  • No hot water at all: a failed aquastat or tank sensor, a stuck zone valve, or a dead circulator on the tank loop.
  • Runs out fast: boiler too small for the tank, priority not set, or air trapped in the coil.
  • T&P valve dripping: thermal expansion with no working expansion tank, or water set too hot.
  • Scalding or uneven temperature: a worn or missing mixing valve.
  • Water around the base: a leaking fitting, which we can fix, or a leaking tank, which means replacement.
Installation

Ideal Indirect Water Heater Installation and Replacement

Price depends on tank size, boiler compatibility, near-boiler piping changes and code items like the expansion tank. Call for a quote. If your Ideal boiler is failing too, read our Ideal boiler repair page, or see our boiler service options.

  1. Free estimate: we check the tank, your boiler's output and how much hot water you use.
  2. Pick a replacement tank size matched to the boiler's output.
  3. Drain and remove the Monarch, then set the new indirect.
  4. Pipe it as a priority zone, with a new T&P valve, expansion tank and mixing valve if needed.
  5. Fill, purge air, set the temperature and test recovery.

FAQ

Ideal Indirect Water Heater Repair and Replacement on Long Island FAQs

Common questions about this indirect water heater brand on Long Island.

1Who made Ideal indirect water heaters?

Ideal Heating North America, which also made Exalt and Gallant boilers. It says it ceased operations on November 3, 2025.

2Can a Monarch tank be repaired?

Usually, yes. Most failures are in the aquastat, zone valve, circulator or T&P valve. A leaking stainless tank can't be repaired and must be replaced.

3Can I put a different brand of indirect on my Ideal boiler?

Yes. Any boiler-fired indirect sized to your boiler's output will work, though we may need to wire it to the boiler's hot water control.

4How long should an indirect water heater last?

There's no set number, but a stainless tank with no burner of its own often outlasts a standard tank. Annual checks of the T&P valve and expansion tank help it get there.

5What size indirect do I need?

Most two-bath homes do well with a 40 to 50 gallon tank. Larger tubs or more bathrooms call for 80 gallons or more, as long as the boiler can keep up.
