About Bock SideKick Indirect Water Heaters

You get a big first hour of hot water and a tank that sits quietly when nobody's using it. We install, repair and service Bock indirect water heaters across Long Island, Nassau and Suffolk Counties, and we stock the common parts. Domino Fuel has been family-owned since 1981, and we answer no-heat and no-hot-water calls 24/7.

Bock Water Heaters started in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1929 as an oil-fired water heater maker. It began building SideKick indirects in 1993. In 2025 Bock became part of Bradford White, whose own indirect line is called PowerStor.

The SideKick's calling card is its lining. Bock calls it C-Glass, a cobalt-enriched porcelain enamel that coats the steel tank and the coil. Bock says it resists aggressive water and chloride damage. If you heat with an oil furnace instead of a boiler, see our page on Bock oil-fired water heaters.

How a Bock Indirect Works With Your Oil or Gas Boiler

Inside the SideKick is a coil. When the tank's aquastat senses the water has cooled, it calls for heat. A circulator or zone valve then sends hot boiler water through the coil, and the coil heats the tank water around it. Boiler water and drinking water never mix.

To your boiler, the tank is just one more zone. Many Long Island installs set it as a priority zone, so the house heat pauses for a few minutes while the tank recovers. Bock rates the SideKick with 180 and 200 degree boiler water, so it pairs with a standard cast iron oil boiler or a gas boiler.

Bock Indirect Water Heaters for Long Island Homes

Lots of older Long Island oil boilers make hot water with a tankless coil inside the boiler. That keeps the boiler hot all summer and can leave you with weak showers when the coil scales up. Swapping to a SideKick lets the boiler rest between calls and gives you stored hot water ready to go.

Size the boiler and tank together. Bock's ratings show the 40SK taking about 105,000 BTU/hr of coil output at 180 degrees, so a small boiler can't push a big tank to its full rating. We check your boiler's output before picking a size.

Space is usually easy, since a SideKick needs no flue or chimney. The 80SK and 119SK add a swirl-style cold inlet that Bock says cuts sediment.

Warranty

Bock SideKick Indirect Water Heater Warranty

Bock offers a limited lifetime warranty on residential SideKick tanks, but only if the registration form is returned to Bock at installation. Without registration, the residential warranty is seven years. Commercial installs get a three-year limited warranty.

We send the registration to Bock for you after the install. The full coverage terms are in the SideKick installation and operation manual.

On top of the manufacturer's coverage, Domino backs every installation with a 1-year labor warranty.

Bock vs Bradford White Indirect Water Heaters

These are sister brands now, and they take different paths to fight corrosion. The Bock SideKick uses a glass-lined steel tank and coil protected by two magnesium anode rods. Bradford White's PowerStor SS uses a stainless steel tank and heat exchanger, and adds its Hydrojet system to cut sediment.

In plain terms, the SideKick has anodes you check over the years, while a stainless tank is built to resist corrosion without them. Your water, your budget and your boiler all play a part, and we'll walk you through both.

Repair & Service

Bock SideKick Indirect Water Heater Repair and Service

When a SideKick stops making hot water, the tank is rarely the problem. It's usually the boiler side.

  • Lukewarm water only: the boiler is running too cool or the aquastat is set too low.
  • No hot water, but the heat works: the indirect zone circulator, zone valve or relay has failed.
  • Hot water runs out fast: the tank is too big for the boiler, or there's no priority on the zone.
  • Relief valve dripping: thermal expansion without an expansion tank, or a faulty T and P valve.
  • Smelly hot water: the magnesium anode rods need checking.
  • Water at the base of the tank: a leaking fitting or a failed tank.

Bock SideKick Tune-Up and Parts

We stock the common parts, including aquastats, circulators, zone valves, relief valves, mixing valves and anode rods. A tune-up includes testing the aquastat, checking the anodes, flushing sediment and confirming the boiler hits its target temperature. We can do it during your yearly boiler service.

Installation

Bock SideKick Indirect Water Heater Installation and Replacement

Price depends on the tank size, the piping and controls your boiler needs, whether we're removing an old tank or capping a tankless coil, and code items. Call for a quote.

  1. We check your boiler's output and how much hot water your home uses.
  2. We match a SideKick size to both.
  3. We pipe the coil to the boiler on its own zone with a circulator or zone valve, plus a priority control if it fits your setup.
  4. We pipe the cold and hot lines with a relief valve, expansion tank and anti-scald mixing valve.
  5. We wire the aquastat, fire the boiler, set the temperature and check for leaks.

FAQ

Bock SideKick Indirect Water Heater FAQs

Common questions about this indirect water heater brand on Long Island.

1Will a Bock indirect work with my oil boiler?

Yes, in most cases. The SideKick has no burner of its own and runs off any hot water boiler with enough output. Bock rates it with 180 and 200 degree boiler water, which a typical oil boiler can supply.

2Is the Bock SideKick stainless steel?

No. The SideKick is steel with Bock's C-Glass cobalt-enriched glass lining on the tank and coil, plus two magnesium anode rods.

3What size Bock indirect do I need?

For most two-bath homes, the 40SK or 50SK. Big tubs or three or more baths may call for an 80SK. Your boiler's output matters too.

4How long is the Bock indirect warranty?

Limited lifetime for residential use, if the registration form is returned at installation. Unregistered residential units get seven years, and commercial units get three.

5Does Bock make a solar indirect too?

Yes. Bock's EnviroStar line is built for solar and geothermal hot water. Most Long Island homes we see use the boiler-fed SideKick.
