Lochinvar's roots go back to the Walter Vallett Company, founded in 1939. The Lochinvar of today took shape in 1980 and moved into its Lebanon, Tennessee, headquarters and plant in 2001. A. O. Smith, which calls itself the world's largest water heater maker, bought Lochinvar in 2011.

Lochinvar also builds Knight boilers, and its brochure pitches the Squire as a match for them, though the tank runs off other boilers too. Lochinvar says the Squire is designed, engineered and assembled in the USA.

Lochinvar Indirect Water Heater Models We Install and Service

Lochinvar sells two indirect families today. The Squire comes as the SIT single-coil tank, the SDT dual-coil tank for solar, the SET with a 4,500 watt electric backup element, and double-wall SIT models. The GIT is a glass-lined steel tank and coil with an anode rod. The older Squire SSS series is discontinued, but we still service it.

SIT ratings below assume 180 degree boiler water and a 77 degree rise. GIT ratings come from its submittal sheet.

How a Lochinvar Indirect Works With Your Oil or Gas Boiler

Boiler water is pumped through a smooth 316L stainless coil inside the Squire, and that coil heats the domestic water in the tank. The two waters never mix. On a Lochinvar Knight boiler, a tank sensor lets the boiler run the tank directly and give hot water priority over the heating zones.

On a Long Island oil boiler or another brand of gas boiler, the Squire works with an aquastat and a zone circulator or zone valve. Lochinvar sells the aquastat separately for this setup. Each model lists a minimum boiler output and a 14 GPM minimum flow, so the circulator has to be sized right.

Lochinvar Indirect Water Heaters for Long Island Homes

Check your water before you pick a stainless tank. Lochinvar's manual limits chloride to 80 ppm and pH to between 6.0 and 8.0. Most public water on Long Island is fine, but private wells and softened water are worth testing.

The Squire holds heat well. Two inches of R-13.4 foam keep standby loss as low as 0.5 degrees per hour, so an oil boiler doesn't fire just to keep the tank warm. That matters in summer, when heat isn't running.

The SIT040 needs 115,000 BTU/hr and the SIT119 needs 199,000. If your boiler is on the small side, we'll size the tank down rather than starve it.

Warranty

Lochinvar Indirect Water Heater Warranty

In a single-family home, Lochinvar warrants the tank and heat exchanger for life, with parts covered for 5 years. After year 10, tank coverage becomes a pro-rated credit toward a new unit, starting at 70 percent in year 11. The unit must stay where it was first installed.

Used for anything other than a single-family home, tank coverage drops to 10 years and parts to 1 year. Damage from scale, sediment or poor installation isn't covered. Keep your receipt and service records.

Lochinvar Squire vs Triangle Tube Smart

Both are 316L stainless indirects, but they're built differently. The Squire is a coil-in-tank design: boiler water runs through a coil, and the tank holds your drinking water. The Triangle Tube Smart is tank-in-tank, with drinking water in an inner tank and boiler water in the outer shell.

The bigger difference today is support. Triangle Tube ceased operations in November 2025, so new Smart tanks no longer come with a warranty. If you're replacing a Triangle Tube indirect, a Squire is a common swap.

Here's what we run into on Lochinvar tanks. Most fixes are on the controls, not the tank.

Water never gets hot enough: the tank sensor or aquastat is out of calibration or the boiler setpoint is low.
No hot water on a Knight boiler: the tank sensor is unplugged or failed, or the DHW pump isn't running.
Slow recovery: flow through the coil is below 14 GPM, often from an undersized circulator or partly closed valve.
Relief valve dripping: thermal expansion without an expansion tank, or a worn relief valve.
Smelly water in a GIT tank: the anode rod needs inspection.

We stock the common parts, including aquastats, tank sensors, circulators, zone valves, relief valves and mixing valves. A tune-up tests the controls, checks flow and boiler temperature, and looks over every valve, pipe and fitting. Lochinvar asks homeowners to check for leaks monthly, and we cover the rest during boiler service.

We measure your boiler's output and your family's hot water use.
We pick a Squire or GIT size that the boiler can fully heat.
We pipe the coil as its own zone, with a tank sensor on a Knight boiler or an aquastat on other boilers.
We add a relief valve, expansion tank and an anti-scald mixing valve rated to ASSE 1017 or 1070, the standards Lochinvar recommends.
We fill, purge air, fire the boiler and test the tank through a full heat-up.
