How a TurboMax Works With Your Oil or Gas Boiler

A TurboMax flips the usual indirect design. Boiler water fills the tank and enters at the top through an injector that stirs it around the coils. Cold drinking water enters at the bottom and climbs through copper coils, picking up heat on the way. Thermo 2000 says it goes from 40 to 140 degrees in under 7 seconds.

Thermo 2000 says the TurboMax works with any heat source, including oil, gas, electric, wood and solar. Its manual says standard cast iron or steel boilers must run above 140 degrees to prevent flue gas corrosion, and the boiler supply should be 20 to 40 degrees hotter than your hot water setting. The factory aquastat ships set at 180 with a 10 degree differential.

Because the tank holds boiler water, it can double as a buffer tank. That extra volume can help a boiler that short cycles, and Thermo 2000 notes a boiler that's too large can short cycle.

Flow rate matters more than tank size here. A TurboMax doesn't store hot drinking water, so it has to keep up while you run it. A home with a big rain shower and a soaking tub needs a 50-5 or larger.

Hard water is the one thing to watch. Thermo 2000's warranty excludes water over 10.5 grains per gallon and pH outside 6.5 to 8.5. Some Long Island wells run harder than that, so we test before installing.

Thermo 2000 rates standby loss at under half a degree per hour. That's good news for oil heat homes in summer, when the boiler only fires for hot water.

Thermo 2000 covers the tank and copper coils for 15 years in residential use and 10 years in commercial use. Mechanical parts get 2 years. Residential means a single-family home where the owner lives full time.

The warranty doesn't cover failure from poor installation or maintenance, very hard or acidic water, or coil flow above 3 GPM per coil. Thermo 2000 also requires the relief valve to be checked regularly.

These are the TurboMax problems we see most.

Water turns cooler during long showers: demand is above the model's max flow, or the boiler can't keep the tank hot.
Hot water flow dropping over time: scale is building inside the copper coils from hard water.
Tank relief valve discharging: pressure on the boiler side is too high; the tank valve is set at 30 psi on most models.
Domestic relief valve dripping: thermal expansion with no potable expansion tank.
Boiler short cycling: boiler output is too high for the load, or the aquastat differential is set too tight.
No hot water, heat works: failed priority relay, circulator or aquastat.
