About Durastar Air Handlers

A matched Durastar air handler gives you the rated efficiency, quieter rooms and better summer dehumidification. We install, repair and service Durastar air handlers in attics, basements, closets and garages across Long Island, and we check your duct static pressure before we pick a model.

Durastar is a brand owned by Ferguson Enterprises, the plumbing and HVAC supply company. Its air handlers are built to pair with Durastar heat pumps and condensers, and Durastar also sells ductless mini-splits, gas furnaces, coils and PTAC units.

Durastar's coils use aluminum fins bonded to internally grooved tubing. Durastar says all-aluminum coils don't rust like copper can and resist small leaks better. The Advanced unit's steel cabinet is lined with one inch of foil-faced insulation and is rated under 2% air leakage per ASHRAE Standard 193.

Durastar Air Handlers for Long Island Homes

Many Long Island capes and ranches hide the air handler in an attic. Attic units need a secondary drain pan and a float switch, since an overflow there lands on your ceiling. The convertible Advanced and Core ECM units fit horizontal attic spaces as easily as an upflow basement closet.

If an oil boiler heats your home and the air handler only cools, a heat pump upgrade can add electric heat to the same ductwork. Core ECM models accept field-installed auxiliary heat kits, so you get backup heat on the coldest nights. When we change a heat pump, we match the air handler too, because a mismatched pair can't reach its rated SEER2.

Warranty

Durastar Air Handler Warranty

Durastar offers a 10-year limited parts warranty on select unitary models with registration. Register the air handler along with the outdoor unit; Durastar says all components of a split system should be registered to get full coverage. A licensed HVAC contractor has to install the equipment.

Accessories like electric heaters carry the warranty of the equipment they connect to. Durastar also sells a 5-year extended warranty through contractors.

On top of the manufacturer's coverage, Domino backs every installation with a 1-year labor warranty.

Durastar vs GE Air Handlers

GE Appliances sells its NAM air handlers in one-piece and two-piece cabinets with variable speed, ECM or PSC blowers from 1.5 to 5 tons. GE uses aluminum alloy tube and fin coils, a factory TXV and an antimicrobial drain pan, and it doubles its 5-year base warranty to 10 years with registration.

Durastar's range is wider at the top, with communicating variable-speed units and EEV metering for its side-discharge heat pumps. GE's two-piece cabinet helps when a unit has to go up attic stairs in sections. Both are sound choices; we match the brand of the outdoor unit you already have or plan to buy.

Repair & Service

Durastar Air Handler Repair and Service

We stock common parts such as capacitors, float switches, drain pans and blower motors. A tune-up covers the filter, coil, blower, drain line and electrical checks.

  • Water on the ceiling or floor: a clogged condensate drain or a tripped float switch.
  • Blower won't start: a failed ECM motor module, capacitor on a PSC unit, or control board fault.
  • Frozen indoor coil: a dirty filter, low airflow or low refrigerant charge.
  • Weak airflow upstairs: high static pressure from undersized returns or a clogged coil.
  • Burning smell when heat starts: dust on heat strips, or a heat kit relay that's failing.
Installation

Durastar Air Handler Installation and Replacement

An air handler swap usually takes a day. See our AC installation and replacement service for what happens on the cooling side.

  1. Check duct size, static pressure and the outdoor unit you'll pair with.
  2. Pick the tier, tonnage and position, and add a heat kit if you need backup heat.
  3. Set the unit level, seal duct connections and install a secondary pan and float switch.
  4. Connect the line set, pull a vacuum and set airflow for your system.
  5. Register the air handler and outdoor unit with Durastar.

FAQ

Durastar Air Handler FAQs

Common questions about this air handler brand on Long Island.

1Do I have to replace my air handler when I replace my heat pump?

Usually, yes. A matched pair is needed for the rated SEER2 and for most rebates, and an old coil may use the wrong refrigerant.

2Can a Durastar air handler go in my attic?

Yes. Advanced and Core ECM models are four-way convertible, so they install horizontally, and we add a secondary drain pan and float switch.

3What refrigerant do Durastar air handlers use?

It depends on the model. Newer Low GWP models use R-454B, while older stock is R-410A, so we match the air handler to your outdoor unit.

4Does a Durastar air handler have backup heat?

It can. Durastar sells field-installed auxiliary heater kits for its ECM air handlers.

5How much does a Durastar air handler replacement cost?

Call for a quote. Tonnage, blower type, attic or basement access, duct changes and a heat kit drive the price.
