About Weil-McLain Indirect Water Heaters

We install, repair and service Weil-McLain Aqua Plus and Aqua Pro indirect water heaters, and we stock the common parts. You get a free estimate on a new tank and 24/7 help if the hot water quits.

Weil-McLain has made heating equipment since 1881 and is best known for cast iron boilers. It's part of SPX Technologies, whose hydronics group also includes Williamson-Thermoflo and Patterson-Kelley.

Weil-McLain doesn't sell a standalone gas or electric tank for homes. Its two residential water heaters, the Aqua Plus and the Aqua Pro, are both indirect-fired. Hot boiler water flows through a coil inside the tank and warms your domestic water, then returns to the boiler. See how they stack up against other makers on our indirect water heater brands page.

Weil-McLain Indirect Water Heaters for Long Island Homes

A lot of Long Island oil homes still get hot water from a tankless coil inside the boiler. That coil can run short when two showers go at once, and it keeps the boiler hot all summer. Moving to an Aqua Plus or Aqua Pro stores heated water in an insulated tank, so the boiler fires only when the tank calls.

Sizing ties back to the boiler. Weil-McLain's ratings assume a certain boiler output; the Aqua Plus 35, for example, is rated with 170 MBH of boiler output at 200 degrees F. A smaller boiler still works, just with slower recovery. The Aqua Plus manual also covers piping to a low-pressure steam boiler, which helps in older homes with steam radiators.

Space is usually easy. The Aqua Plus needs only 1 inch of clearance at the sides and 12 inches on top, and it must stand upright. If you're on a private well, have the water tested first: the Aqua Plus warranty requires chloride under 100 ppm and a pH between 7 and 8.

Warranty

Weil-McLain Indirect Water Heater Warranty

The Aqua Plus tank carries a limited lifetime residential warranty. Replacement costs you nothing in years 1 to 5, then your share rises over time to 90% in year 16 and later. Other parts are covered at 100% for 2 years.

The Aqua Pro tank is covered for 12 years from installation, and the removable coil falls under the 2-year parts coverage. For both, registration isn't required to activate the warranty, and labor isn't covered. A new ASME-listed temperature and pressure relief valve must be installed with the tank.

On top of the manufacturer's coverage, Domino backs every installation with a 1-year labor warranty.

Weil-McLain vs Williamson Indirect Water Heaters

Williamson-Thermoflo, Weil-McLain's sister brand under SPX, sells the GL indirect water heater. The GL uses a glass-lined steel tank with a sacrificial magnesium anode rod and comes in 32, 42, 53, 80 and 105 sizes. Its residential warranty is 10 years.

The Aqua Plus skips the anode because its stainless tank is fully passivated, and the Aqua Pro's composite tank has no anode at all. That means no anode to check or replace. The Weil-McLain tanks also carry longer tank coverage than the GL's 10 years.

Repair & Service

Weil-McLain Indirect Water Heater Repair and Service

Most indirect tank problems start outside the tank, in the boiler, pump or control. These are the calls we get most.

  • No hot water at all: the tank's circulator or zone valve failed, or the boiler isn't getting the call from the tank control.
  • Water runs out fast: the boiler is too small for the tank, or the thermostat is set low.
  • Lukewarm water at the faucet: a mixing valve set too low or stuck.
  • Relief valve dripping: high water pressure or thermal expansion with no working expansion tank.
  • Water around the base: a leaking fitting or drain valve; a tank leak means a warranty check.

Weil-McLain Indirect Water Heater Parts and Upkeep

We stock the common parts, including circulators, zone valves, mixing valves, relief valves and expansion tanks. A yearly visit checks the relief valve, flushes sediment from the drain and confirms the control is reading right. For leaks or no hot water, book water heater repair on Long Island.

Installation

Weil-McLain Indirect Water Heater Installation and Replacement

Price depends on tank size, Aqua Plus or Aqua Pro, piping distance, whether we add a circulator or zone valve, and removal of the old water heater. Call for a quote; estimates are free.

  1. We count fixtures and baths, then check your boiler's output to pick the tank size.
  2. We set the tank on its leveling legs within clearance limits.
  3. We pipe it as its own zone with a circulator or zone valve, plus an expansion tank.
  4. We wire the tank control to the boiler and install a new relief valve.
  5. We fill, purge air, test recovery and show you how to set the temperature.

FAQ

Weil-McLain Indirect Water Heater FAQs

Common questions about this water heater brand on Long Island.

1Does a Weil-McLain Indirect Water Heater Work With an Oil Boiler?

Yes, as long as the boiler has enough output for the tank. The Aqua Plus manual refers to oil-fired boilers, names the Ultra Oil in its ratings notes and shows piping to a steam boiler.

2Does Weil-McLain Make a Gas Tank Water Heater?

No, not for homes. Its residential water heaters are the Aqua Plus and Aqua Pro, and both are indirect-fired from a boiler.

3Does the Aqua Plus Need an Anode Rod?

No. Weil-McLain builds it from fully passivated, welded 316L stainless steel, so no anode rod is needed.

4What Size Weil-McLain Indirect Tank Do I Need?

It depends on your baths and your boiler. The Aqua Plus runs from the 35 to the 105 and the Aqua Pro from 30 to 119 gallons, and we size by fixture count and boiler output.

5Is the Weil-McLain Water Heater Warranty Prorated?

The Aqua Plus tank warranty is free for the first 5 years, then prorated. The Aqua Pro tank has 12 years of coverage, with no proration mentioned in the warranty.
