About State Hot Water Tanks

Domino Fuel is listed on State's contractor locator, and we install, repair and service State hot water tanks on Long Island. We're family-owned since 1981, licensed and insured, and we keep the common State parts on hand so most repairs finish in one visit.

State Water Heaters began as State Industries, a Tennessee water heater maker, and its badge still reads "since 1946." A. O. Smith closed its purchase of State Industries in December 2001. Today State and A. O. Smith are the two brands A. O. Smith sells through plumbing wholesalers.

State says its ProLine tanks are available only through professional distribution and are installed by independent contractors. You won't find them in a big-box aisle. The lineup runs in three tiers: ProLine for everyday use, ProLine Master with heavier-duty parts, and ProLine XE for tankless and heat pump models.

State Hot Water Tanks for Long Island Homes

Most State tanks we replace on Long Island sit in basements next to an oil or gas boiler. If your tank shares a chimney with the boiler, we check the draft before reusing the flue. A tank left alone on an oversized chimney can backdraft.

No chimney? State's Premier condensing tanks vent sideways through the wall, and the GS6-40-YBDS 300 is a 40-gallon direct vent model rated at 38,000 BTU. For homes without gas, State's Premier heat pump tanks come in 40 to 80 gallon sizes, including Premier 120V models rated up to 3.2 UEF.

Heat pump tanks can qualify for PSEG Long Island's ENERGY STAR heat pump water heater rebate, listed at up to $1,200 in 2026. The rebate is capped at 50% of the purchase price and one unit per account every 5 years.

Warranty

State Hot Water Tank Warranty

Read the model number before you call. In State's ProLine gas lineup, the GS6 models we looked at carry 6-year limited tank and parts warranties, the GW8 ProLine Master models carry 8 years, and the GSX models carry 10 years. State's heat pump tanks list 10-year limited warranties.

Coverage counts from the installation date, so keep the invoice with the tank. Labor after the first visit is usually on the owner, which is why we test parts before we replace anything.

On top of the manufacturer's coverage, Domino backs every installation with a 1-year labor warranty.

State vs A.O. Smith Hot Water Tanks

State and A. O. Smith are made by the same company. The State GS6-50-BCT 400 and the A. O. Smith GCR-50 400 list the same 40,000 BTU input, 0.62 UEF, 84-gallon first hour rating and 6-year coverage. Both use a CoreGard anode, Blue Diamond glass lining and the DynaClean sediment system.

The real differences are names and channels. State calls its premium tanks Premier, Premier HV and Force 90+, while A. O. Smith uses Vertex, Vertex HV and Voltex for close matches; the Force 90+ 50-gallon and the Vertex 50-gallon both list a 118-gallon first hour rating. A. O. Smith also sells a separate Signature series only at Lowe's. State does not have a Lowe's line. For you, the choice usually comes down to which tank a supply house has in stock today and which warranty tier you want. See how A. O. Smith presents the same tanks on our A. O. Smith hot water tank page, or compare every brand on our hot water tank brands page.

Repair & Service

State Hot Water Tank Repair and Service

We stock State anode rods, drain valves, T&P relief valves, dip tubes and heating elements for common models. A yearly flush and anode check keeps a State tank going longer. Book a water heater repair or a tune-up any time.

  • Hot water runs out early: sediment is taking up tank space, or a broken dip tube is mixing cold water into the outlet.
  • LED on the gas control blinking a code: the control is reporting a fault, often ignition or flame sensing.
  • Drip from the drain valve: the valve is worn or clogged with sediment and needs replacing.
  • Water too hot: the gas control setting or a failing control is overheating the tank.
  • Rusty or brown hot water: the anode rod is spent or the tank lining is breaking down.
  • Puddle under the tank: a leaking fitting is fixable, but a leak from the tank body means replacement.
Installation

State Hot Water Tank Installation and Replacement

Your price depends on tank size and tier, venting changes, gas or electrical work, and access to the space. Call for a quote, or read our water heater installation guide to see what goes into the job.

  1. Call or book online, and we'll ask for the model number on your current tank.
  2. A technician checks the gas or power supply, the vent and the space.
  3. You get a written quote that names the State model and tier.
  4. Your old tank comes out, and the State goes in with a new T&P relief valve and fresh connections; then we test the vent draft.
  5. We haul away the old tank and leave you the paperwork for your warranty.
