Many Long Island homes get hot water from an oil boiler's coil or an indirect tank. When that setup fails or you add gas service, a stand-alone Bradford White tank is a common next step, and an atmospheric model can share the old flue if the draft tests clean.

If you've switched your boiler to a sealed, wall-vented unit, the chimney may be too big for the water heater alone. That's where a power vent tank helps. The eF Series power vent model runs on a 4 inch vent for up to 120 equivalent feet.

Electric-only homes have two choices. A standard upright or lowboy tank is simple, while the AeroTherm G2 heat pump tank runs its compressor between 37°F and 120°F and switches to the elements outside that range. It needs zero inches of clearance on the sides and rear, though it still needs open air around it. An AeroTherm on PSEG Long Island's qualified list can earn a utility rebate of up to $1,200 this year.

The model number sets the coverage. Bradford White's residential warranty says the glass-lined tank can be covered for 1, 6, 8 or 10 years, and component parts get 6 years from installation. An RG250T6N has a 6-year tank; a model ending in 10 has a 10-year tank. The AeroTherm G2 10-year models cover the tank and parts for 10 years.

The fine print matters. Labor, removal and reinstallation aren't covered, and removing the anode rod is excluded unless it's for inspection or replacement. Bradford White's Warranty Center will show the warranty length and expiration date when you enter your serial number.
