A lot of oil-heated Long Island homes make hot water off the boiler. When that coil or indirect tank fails, a standalone Rheem tank is one way to stop running the boiler all summer just for showers.

If you have gas but no usable chimney, the Power Direct Vent model draws combustion air and exhausts through two pipes out the wall, with vent runs up to 100 feet. Rheem's Professional gas tanks have a flammable vapor sensor that shuts the heater down if vapors build up, which matters in garages and basements where gas cans or paint are stored.

Going electric? The Prestige ProTerra hybrid pulls heat from the air around it and runs in ambient temperatures from 37F to 145F, so a basement or garage that stays above freezing works. It needs a condensate drain. If your ProTerra model is on PSEG Long Island's qualified list, the 2026 rebate can cover up to $1,200. Its LeakGuard cable and auto shutoff valve limit a leak to no more than 20 ounces of water, according to Rheem. For damp crawl spaces or homes near the bay, the Marathon's outer shell resists dents and salt air and its tank can't rust.

Rheem's warranties vary by model, so check the tag before you buy. Professional Classic Plus gas tanks list 8 years on the tank and 8 years on parts, and ProtectionPlus extends the tank to 12 years.

The Professional Prestige ProTerra hybrid lists a 10-year limited tank and parts warranty. The Marathon is the standout: a lifetime limited tank warranty and 6 years on parts for homes, but only if you register within 90 days of installation.

Rheem and Ruud are sister brands, and Ruud's name is on the oldest water heaters in Rheem's own historical collection. Today both sell professional tank lines through contractors. Our water heater repair techs carry Rheem thermocouples and gas valves, igniters, elements, thermostats, anode rods and T and P valves. Flushing the tank each year clears sediment, and checking the anode rod every few years helps the tank last.

Count bathrooms and people to size the tank by first hour rating, not just gallons.
Check the fuel, chimney or vent path, electrical circuit and floor space.
Drain and remove the old tank and haul it away.
Set the new Rheem tank with a T and P discharge line, expansion tank where required, and a drain pan where needed.
Connect gas or power, fill, test for leaks, and set the temperature.
