Roth Oil Tanks for Long Island Homes

Getting a tank into an old basement is often the hardest part of the job. The 275-gallon DWT 1000L weighs 167 pounds, and Roth says its tanks are up to 50% lighter than conventional steel tanks. It has wide handles on each end and a removable base for tight stairways.

All connections are on top, and there are no fittings below the oil line, so a cracked fitting can't drain the tank. The filling system has a 2-inch thread and lets tanks be installed in groups that fill evenly; two DWT 620Ls can fit where one tall tank won't.

For outdoor installs near the water, the inner tank is plastic and can't rust, and the outer tank is galvanized steel with roll-seamed joints and no welds. Roth lists a cover for outside use, which we install with outdoor tanks.

Long Island Oil Tank Rules for Roth Tanks

In Suffolk County, the Health Department says residential heating oil tanks under 1,100 gallons that are indoors or aboveground outdoors are exempt from Article 12's Permit to Construct, and heating-oil-only sites under 1,100 gallons don't need to register. Fuel oil tanks don't have to be removed unless they're leaking.

In Nassau County, the Department of Health oversees closures of tanks of 1,100 gallons or less. Removals must be scheduled at least 7 days in advance and inspected by the county, and old aboveground tanks should be removed whenever they're replaced. We take care of that scheduling on your swap.

Roth lists a 30-year warranty with 10 years of insurance and a cleanup policy of up to 2 million dollars. Roth's warranty site says the coverage applies to tank failure from defects in workmanship or material and to inner tank failure from internal corrosion, and the insurance covers property damage from a spill.

There's one condition to know: Roth says the 30-year warranty applies when the tank is installed by a Roth Certified Installer. Our installer is Roth certified, so a Roth tank we put in meets that condition. We register the tank's warranty with Roth for you after the install.

Roth vs Granby Oil Tanks

Both are good upgrades from an old single-wall steel tank, and we're an authorized dealer for each. The difference is in how the second layer works.

A Roth tank is fully double-walled: plastic inside, galvanized steel outside, holding 110% of the oil. Granby's EcoGard is a 12-gauge steel tank with a second steel bottom and a 25-year warranty. Roth Oil Tank Service and Common Problems

Roth tanks have few service needs, but we'll check yours on request during a delivery or tune-up. What to watch for:

Optical leak alarm showing oil: the inner tank has leaked into the outer tank; call us to inspect.
Uneven levels in grouped tanks: a blocked fill line or a valve left closed.
Silent vent alarm during a fill: a failed whistle or alarm, which risks overfilling.
Oil smell after delivery: a cap not seated; Roth's double-ring caps need to be locked down.
Fusible link valve tripped: heat near the tank or a bad valve, which shuts off oil to the burner.
