Granby Oil Tanks for Long Island Homes

Most Long Island oil tanks are 275-gallon steel tanks in a basement, and the EcoGard drops into that same footprint. Its double bottom is the point: if the inner floor ever leaks, the oil is held in the space below and shows on a visual monitor, so you find out before oil reaches the slab.

The Standard is the lower-cost choice: a single-wall steel tank from 120 to 330 gallons, set vertical or horizontal, with a 3-year warranty. It suits a tight budget or a short stay in the house.

For an outdoor tank near the water, where salt air and wet winters are hard on steel, ask us about a Roth double-wall tank, which Roth lists for outdoor use with its cover.

Long Island Oil Tank Rules for Granby Tanks

In Suffolk County, Article 12 of the Sanitary Code exempts residential heating oil tanks under 1,100 gallons that are indoors or aboveground outdoors from the Permit to Construct, and sites with only heating oil under 1,100 gallons are exempt from registration, according to the county Health Department.

In Nassau County, the Department of Health handles closures of heating oil tanks of 1,100 gallons or less. A tank removal has to be scheduled at least 7 days ahead and needs a county inspection, and the county says aboveground tanks should be removed and disposed of whenever they're replaced. Nassau points new tank installs to Article XI of its Public Health Ordinance, which requires structural strength and corrosion resistance.

Granby says its tanks carry warranties of 3 to 30 years, depending on the model and the install date. Coverage usually applies only at the original install location, and Granby says moving the tank may void it.

The EcoGard's 25-year warranty applies to tanks installed after June 15, 2011; older EcoGards had 15 years. We register the warranty for you and leave the certificate with you after the install.

These are the two upgrades homeowners ask us about most. The Granby EcoGard is a 12-gauge steel tank with a second steel bottom. A Roth tank has a one-piece blow-molded polyethylene inner tank inside a full galvanized steel outer tank that holds 110% of the inner tank.

Granby's EcoGard has a 25-year warranty. Roth's double-wall tank lists 30 years with 10 years of insurance and a cleanup policy of up to 2 million dollars, when installed by a Roth Certified Installer. The EcoGard fits a standard 275 footprint; the Roth is lighter and narrower. We're an authorized dealer for both, so we can show you each one for your space.
