COD fuel lets you buy heating oil one delivery at a time and pay the driver when it arrives, so you control how much you spend and when. The trick is ordering the right amount at the right time, and knowing what you're paying for. Domino Fuel delivers COD heating oil across Nassau, Suffolk and Queens, often the same day you call.
What's in COD Fuel on Long Island
The fuel is No. 2 heating oil blended with biodiesel, sold as Bioheat. New York's Environmental Conservation Law Section 19-0327 made Nassau and Suffolk the first counties to require it: at least 5% biodiesel from July 1, 2018. The rest of the state followed in 2022, the minimum rose to 10% on July 1, 2025, and it goes to 20% on July 1, 2030.
That means a COD delivery and an automatic delivery from the same company carry the same blend. Paying COD changes how you buy, not what goes in your tank.
How Much COD Fuel to Order for a Long Island Home
The most common home tank is 275 gallons, which holds about 240 gallons once you leave room at the top for air. A 2,000 square foot home uses roughly 150 to 250 gallons a month in winter, or 700 to 1,000 gallons a season (our guide to how much oil it takes to heat a 2,000 square foot home breaks that down).
So a full tank lasts about four to six weeks in January, and a gauge reading of 1/4 can mean only a week or two left. That's why we tell COD customers to call at 1/4, not at empty.

COD Fuel Timing on Long Island

Before a cold snap or a holiday weekend, order early. Sunday and same-day delivery are available, but a planned delivery at 1/4 tank keeps you off the emergency list and the house warm.
Running Out of COD Fuel
When the tank runs dry, the burner pulls air and sludge from the bottom into the line. Adding oil usually isn't enough to restart it: the line has to be bled and the pump primed. Our burner prime and start service handles that, and we can pair it with an emergency fill so it's one visit, but it's a service call you can skip by ordering at 1/4.
Making COD Fuel Last Longer on Long Island
The cheapest gallon is the one your burner doesn't waste. A dirty nozzle or a clogged oil filter makes a burner run longer for the same heat, which is why a yearly oil boiler tune-up belongs on the calendar before heating season.
Inside the house, the thermostat does most of the work. Turning it down at night and when nobody's home cuts run time, and sealing drafts around doors and windows keeps the heat you paid for. Watch how many days a fill lasts this winter; if it drops sharply with no cold snap to explain it, call us to check the burner.
Choosing a COD Fuel Supplier on Long Island
Price per gallon is only part of the decision. Before you order from any COD company, check:
- A metered delivery with a printed, numbered ticket. New York's Agriculture and Markets Law Section 192 requires both for home heating oil.
- The minimum order, and whether small orders carry a fee.
- How you can pay at delivery: we take cash, bank-certified checks, money orders and major credit and debit cards.
- Whether they deliver same day, on Sundays and in an emergency when you need it.
- Whether they accept HEAP, if your household gets it.
COD Fuel and HEAP Benefits on Long Island
The Home Energy Assistance Program helps lower-income households pay for heat, and Domino Fuel is a participating HEAP heating oil vendor, so the benefit goes toward your delivery. For the 2026 to 2027 season, Governor Hochul's office announced that applications open November 2, the benefit for homes heated with oil rises to $990, and emergency benefits open January 4, 2027. A family of four can qualify with gross income up to $82,230 a year.
