About Generac Standby Generators

We install, repair and service Generac home standby generators, and we stock the common parts. Because we also work on heating systems, we can make sure your oil burner or boiler is on the circuits the generator covers.

Generac was founded in 1959 and says it was the first company to engineer affordable home standby generators. Today it calls itself the number one manufacturer of home backup generators. It also builds the Honeywell-branded home standby generators, which share the same engines and alternators.

Generac designs its own G-Force engines for generator use. The Guardian Series uses an aluminum enclosure with a powder-coated finish Generac calls RhinoCoat, and an Evolution controller with an LCD display that tracks battery status and maintenance.

Ratings are Generac's maximum continuous output. Natural gas output is lower than propane on most sizes, so size on the fuel you'll actually use.

Generac Standby Generators for Long Island Homes

Fuel is the first question. If you already have natural gas, we check that the meter and gas line can supply the generator; Generac's 10 kW unit, for example, needs 3.5 to 7.0 inches of water column on natural gas. Many oil-heated homes don't have gas service, so the generator runs on a propane tank instead.

Placement comes next. Generac's guidance, based on NFPA 37, calls for 5 feet from operable windows, doors and vents, 5 feet of clearance above, and 3 feet at the front and ends. Units with the SwRI label can sit 18 inches from the house wall. Local codes can be stricter.

Guardian units use an aluminum enclosure with a powder-coated finish, and the 28 kW cellular model adds a sloped roof and rear air intake to keep snow and ice out. A raised pad keeps the unit above standing water.

Warranty

Generac Standby Generator Warranty

Every Generac home standby generator comes with a 5-year limited warranty and 24/7 support from Generac. Activate the generator when it's installed so the warranty and Mobile Link monitoring are tied to your unit.

Mobile Link remote monitoring is free with Guardian Series units. On the newer cellular models, real-time updates and maintenance alerts need a premium subscription.

On top of the manufacturer's coverage, Domino backs every installation with a 1-year labor warranty.

Generac vs Honeywell Standby Generators

These are sister brands from the same factory. Generac says a Honeywell home standby generator has the same internal parts as a Generac, including the same engines, alternators and power ratings. The differences are the logo, the color scheme, some minor design details and the warranty length.

For service, that's good news: parts are shared, so we repair and maintain Honeywell units the same way we do Generac. For a new install, Generac's own Guardian lineup has more sizes and the free Mobile Link monitoring, so that's what we put in.

Repair & Service

Generac Standby Generator Repair and Service

We stock the common parts, including batteries, oil filters, air filters and spark plugs. Yearly service changes the oil and filters, tests the battery, checks the transfer switch and runs the unit under load. Firmware updates usually need a dealer unless your controller supports Wi-Fi updating.

  • Generator didn't start during an outage: a weak battery, a closed fuel valve or a tripped main breaker on the unit.
  • Skipped its weekly self-test: the exercise schedule was lost after a firmware update or a dead battery.
  • Red alarm light on the controller: low oil pressure, overcrank or overspeed fault stored in the Evolution controller.
  • Lights flicker on generator power: an overloaded unit or a fuel supply that can't keep up with demand.
  • Mobile Link shows offline: a Wi-Fi or cellular connection issue, or a subscription that lapsed.
Installation

Generac Standby Generator Installation and Replacement

What drives the price: generator size, whole-house versus essential-circuit transfer switch, gas line length or propane tank setup, pad and site work, and permit fees. Our own electricians do the wiring, so there's no outside subcontractor to schedule. Call for a quote. Our generator installation page covers the process, and the standby generator brands page lists every make we work on.

  1. We list what you want running in an outage and calculate the load.
  2. We confirm natural gas capacity or plan a propane tank.
  3. We pick a spot that meets clearance rules and pull the permits.
  4. We set the pad and generator, run the gas line, and our in-house electricians wire the automatic transfer switch.
  5. We activate the unit, set the self-test schedule and test a full transfer with you watching.

FAQ

Generac Standby Generator FAQs

Common questions about this standby generator brand on Long Island.

1What Size Generac Generator Do I Need?

It depends on what you want to run. A 10 kW unit with a 16-circuit switch covers the basics like heat, the fridge and the sump pump. Whole-home backup with central AC usually needs one of the larger Guardian sizes, like the 24 kW or 26 kW. We confirm with a load calculation.

2Can a Generac Generator Run on Propane If I Don't Have Gas?

Yes. Every Generac home standby generator runs on natural gas or propane, and most sizes produce more power on propane.

3How Close to the House Can a Generac Generator Go?

Units with the SwRI label can sit 18 inches from the wall. They still need 5 feet from windows, doors and vents, and 5 feet open above.

4How Long Is the Generac Warranty?

Five years. Every Generac home standby generator has a 5-year limited warranty.

5Does a Generac Generator Test Itself?

Yes. Guardian units have a Quiet-Test self-test mode that runs at lower RPM for five or twelve minutes, so you hear less noise during the test.

6Do You Service Honeywell Generators?

Yes. Generac builds Honeywell home standby generators with the same engines and alternators, so we repair and maintain them and stock the parts. When a Honeywell unit is worn out, we replace it with a Generac of the same size.
